ON THIS DAY, 28 March 1879, Terence MacSwiney was born. He was arrested in 1920 for sedition and went on hunger strike – he died 74 days later. His death strengthened the feeling against British parliament. His influence went further than Ireland; Mahatma Gandhi was said to have been influenced by him.
